Buying by brand name, not protocol
The Philips Hue brand is great, but a Philips Hue bulb without the Hue Bridge is just an average Wi-Fi bulb. The protocol (Zigbee) is what makes it special — not the name.

Not checking the socket type
E27 is the standard large screw fitting. E14 is the small candelabra fitting. GU10 is the push-and-twist spotlight fitting. Check your fixtures before ordering — returns are a pain.

Do smart bulbs use more electricity than regular bulbs?
No — smart bulbs are LED and consume roughly the same wattage (8–10W) as equivalent LED bulbs. The only difference is they draw a tiny standby current (~0.5W) when on but not lit.

Why is my smart bulb flickering?

Can I use smart bulbs in outdoor fixtures?
