How we rank smart bulbs

💶

Value

Price per lumen, cost of the required ecosystem, long-term running cost. A cheap bulb with an expensive hub is not cheap.

📡

Reliability

Wi-Fi bulbs occasionally drop off your network. Zigbee mesh bulbs almost never do. We weight long-term reliability heavily - smart home is for years, not months.

🧩

Ecosystem

Does it work with your voice assistant? Does it integrate with motion sensors and other devices? A bulb that only works in isolation isn't a smart home.

Smart bulb buying mistakes

  • 1

Buying by brand name, not protocol

The Philips Hue brand is great, but a Philips Hue bulb without the Hue Bridge is just an average Wi-Fi bulb. The protocol (Zigbee) is what makes it special - not the name.

  • 2

    Not checking the socket type

E27 is the standard large screw fitting. E14 is the small candelabra fitting. GU10 is the push-and-twist spotlight fitting. Check your fixtures before ordering - returns are a pain.

  • 3

    Buying a 4-pack before testing 1

Always buy one bulb first. Test it in your exact setup with your Wi-Fi, your app, your voice assistant. Only once you're happy, buy the full pack.

  • 4

    Ignoring the lumen output

A smart bulb rated at 400 lumens in a living room floor lamp will feel dim. Check the lumen rating matches your fixture - most rooms need 800+ lumens per bulb for comfortable reading light.

Frequently asked questions

Do smart bulbs use more electricity than regular bulbs?

No - smart bulbs are LED and consume roughly the same wattage (8–10W) as equivalent LED bulbs. The only difference is they draw a tiny standby current (~0.5W) when on but not lit.

Can I dim smart bulbs without a dimmer switch?

Yes. Smart bulbs have built-in dimming controlled via app or voice - you don't need a dimmer switch. In fact, a dimmer switch can actually break smart bulb functionality.

How long do smart bulbs last?

Most smart bulbs are rated for 15,000–25,000 hours. At 4 hours per day, that's 10–17 years. The electronics typically outlast the LED component.

Why is my smart bulb flickering?

Usually a Wi-Fi connection issue - the bulb is dropping and reconnecting. Move your router closer, or switch to Zigbee for a more stable mesh connection.

Can I use smart bulbs in outdoor fixtures?

Only if the fixture is weatherproof and protects the bulb from direct rain. Smart bulbs themselves are not rated for outdoor use - they need to be inside an enclosed outdoor fixture.
